A Quote to think about:

“I have spoken of the necessity of being frank and honest with oneself about one’s own affairs: many people assume that they can get away from the truth by avoiding thinking about it, but the natural law is inevitable, and the sooner it is recognized, the better”.

– John D. Rockefeller

Getting Closer on my reading list:

The Pathless Path” by Paul Millerd

As I have gotten closer to finishing my book, I have started a coaching business and soon more things. I found this book very timely and informative since these things are kind of out of the norm for a contractor, but helping others grow is extremely rewarding. I listened to this on Audible and got through it in just a few work outs and walks.

This book explores the idea of deviating from the traditional, predefined career path to embrace a more unconventional and fulfilling way of life. Millerd reflects on his own journey, leaving behind a successful corporate career to pursue a life of greater freedom, creativity, and personal growth. The book challenges societal norms around work and success, encouraging readers to question their own assumptions about what it means to live a meaningful life. Through personal stories, insights, and practical advice, Millerd advocates for a path that aligns more closely with one’s values and passions, even if it doesn’t follow a clear or conventional route.

A Message to Parents:

Last week, we moved Blake, our only son, into his dorm at the University of Iowa. It was a bittersweet day and an emotional drive back to Des Moines. I was always told time flies and to enjoy every moment. On the trip home I kept wondering what I would change in the first 18 years with him. There wasn’t much. We had lots of days on the lake, went to many sporting events, I coached him for years, and we ate many family meals together. We had laughs and we argued. There was one thing that kept getting into my thoughts.

We had just both taken up golf this year and it must be the most humbling sport. I used to play a lot before starting the business, and I was good at golf. After 21 years and playing less than 10 times, I was no longer good. After 6 months, I am better but not good. A definite work in progress. I get over the ball and know what I need to do, and my mind does the opposite. But what I kept thinking about was the times I played with Blake this summer, 2 times a week. The first time I pushed him to speed up, I don’t know why, but when on the course I am always worried about slowing the people behind us. He told me that day he hated when I did it and made golf not fun for him. This also happened when fishing with him.

Sadly, it happened almost every time we golfed this summer. Last night I made some actual golf shots. But I was waiting to tee off and thought back to the times I played with Blake and stressed him out for no reason. All the times I had with Blake were good but could’ve been much better had I relaxed. We would have more time to remember the positive.

I couldn’t be prouder of the son I left in Iowa City last week. He is a great human being. God gave us what we could handle, and I think we did pretty well. I know I was told this over and over, but I need to say it again because I wished I had listened just a little bit better, “Cherish the time you have with your children because the will be moving onto something a lot sooner than you think”. YOU CAN’T GET THE TIME BACK!

So, in 48 hours I will be playing golf with Blake, and I won’t give two sh… if we are playing slow because although he has moved out there are even bigger transitions coming later. So, I need to listen to myself and cherish any moments together as you need to with your children.
